Six on Saturday 09. 04. 2022.

After a week of very cold, strong  winds, thankfully they have now died down and it is far more pleasant working in the garden. During the week I was using the house to shelter me from the wind, depending on which way it was blowing, never the same two days running, but mostly I was hiding in the back or in the woodland. I have now ventured round onto the rockery where the weeding has now been finished and I have some more plants to put in to provide colour through the year. One day when I came round into the back, the wind was coming from the west and there was a wonderful smell of honey in the air, I knew straight  away that Euphorbia melliferra was in flower!

No 1

As you can see the Euphorbia has grown over the bench which can’t be seen, never mind sat on, any more! This is aseedling of the one next to it, so I think it must be cut back and moved into the driveway border.

Blink and you miss them!

I’m talking about the lovely dainty Erythroniums which grow in the woodland. They flower for such a short time, I’ve always said don’t go on holiday at this time of year otherwise you will miss their flowering altogether. They are such beautiful flowers, like miniature lilies, only growing about 6 inches tall. I had forgotten to keep a check on mine until we were shown those in Monty Don’s garden last Friday, so first thing Saturday I came to check on mine and found that one of the flowers was almost over.

I can see one flower at the top has almost finished, I spotted them just in time. I must clear space around them so that I can see them more easily, there is too much foliage and weeds hiding them By the time you read this the nettle will have been removed!

From T shirts back to winter jumpers and a gardening coat and I’m still cold when I go outside! I managed a bit of gardening yesterday, cutting back and weeding in the back gravel area so that I was sheltered by the house from the freezing cold north wind but even so had to give up when my fingers were numb, in spite of gardening gloves! I also managed to take a few photos which are as follows for my six……

No 1   Berberis

In the front by the garage is quite a large Berberis bush which is keeping all the bees happy, if they venture out in the cold wind.

The long and the short of it.

Wandering around the garden yesterday, I was struck by how colourful half of it was, the other half looked terribly naked compared to the borders with all the bulbs and flowering shrubs. The naked half is where the borders were flooded in the winter and each time we now have heavy rain they flood again. I’ll start with lots of long views with colour from all the bulbs, perennials and shrubs that are flowering at the moment. We have lost the wonderful sunshine that we had last week and it is now a lot colder with the wind coming from the north and east instead of the south, but even so, the colours seem to pop on a dull day.

Starting with the view that I can see from the back door, which is at the side, my eye is always taken to the red camellia in the background, when it flowers at this time of year. At one time I had bluebells under Viburnum plicatum Maresii but they didn’t like the wet soil and frequent flooding and eventually died out. I have replaced them with camassias which do like wet soil.

Six on Saturday. 26. 03. 22.

What a difference a week makes, a week of lovely warm sunshine. So much is now pushing up and starting to flower, but  flowers that have been with me for a while are suddenly going over with all the unexpected warmth. Not to worry, there is so much to choose from for my six for this week.

No 1  Narcissus

Narcissus St. Patrick’s Day was only a few days late opening, it just missed last weeks offering.

Six on Saturday 19. 3. 2022

We have had better weather this week except for Wednesday when once again it was torrential rain which made gardening totally impossible, I even rang the gardener and asked him not to come. Since then though it has been a lot more warm and sunny but with frosts at night. The flowers keep coming, irrespective of what the weather is doing, so here are my six for this week.

No 1   Camellia.

All my other camellias are now starting to flower, this one has been planted in too much shade away from the others, but I can hardly see it so must move it as soon as it has finished flowering.

The rockery is waking up.

The rockery has had flowers blooming since January when some snowdrops started flowering alongside Rhododendron praecox. They were joined by quite a few hellebores in February and March now has the start of the daffodils alongside the hellebores. When planting I was very concious of not wanting there to be colour in this area just at springtime, so have tried to find plants that will perform in waves through the year.

Looking across the rockery to the back corner of the garden , through to the boundary formed by a Devon bank.

Six on Saturday 12.03.2022

Yesterday was a downpour of torrential proportions and later this afternoon it will be the same, if not worse because of the high winds that are forecast. My roof has now been fixed, new tiles on the front and back ridges and old ones reset along the main ridge, but the conservatory is still waiting for the glass to be made, not looking forward to tonight! Plants though can cope better, so in a short spell of dry weather yesterday I popped out to take my photos for today, I was spoilt for choice, it wasn’t easy just choosing 6!

No 1   Ypsilandra thibetica.

Ypsilandra thibetica fascinates me, the name as well as the flower. I have been meaning to move it into the woodland, into the damp soil where the fritillaries are as it seems quite happy in the bog garden but I don’t often go up there at this time of year because it is quite often flooded. This is the first year that I have found a seedling of it flowering away about 10 ft from the parent, at the edge of the lawn where it is sitting in water!

A bit bruised and battered.

I’m talking about my Crocus tommasinianus growing in the back lawn. When they popped up this year I noticed that a lot had vanished, courtesy of the squirrel I assume, even though I planted my crocus with chilli flakes on top to put them off!

Goodbye February, Hello March.

The first of March is a cold, grey, dreary, windy, wet day, not a lot to make me want to dash out into the garden, but I did first thing to take my photos for this post. All the white from the snowdrops is gradually receding and yellow plus other colours are beginning to take over. Flowers on the rockery are starting to compete with the woodland and I can see these so much more easily from the house, without having to brave the weather!

Primula denticulata is obviously happy on the rockery and hasn’t minded the move from the bog garden.
