We have been told by our local weather forecaster that our day of rain last week only brought us 1.5 cms, nowhere near enough unfortunately, maybe this weekends rain will add to that. Yesterday was so hot, back to scorching temperatures once more, this means of course that everything will grow, grass and weeds as well as the plants! I have a mixed bag for you this week, including more baby birds, so let’s get on………..

Another daylily has opened, I think it might be Gentle Shepherd, whatever its name, it makes a nice change from all the others.

June frothing with Abundance.

June is the most wonderful month, with flowers definitely in abundance and self seeders frothing everywhere. This is the time of year when we used to open our garden under the National Garden Scheme, when we felt it was the best month of the year flower wise, possible when there were two of us working hard making everything tidy. Now with just me and a gardener for 2 hrs a week, it is still very colourful with all the flowers but a bit shaggy round the edges!

To start with, we had lots of wonderful sunsets while we were having all the hot sunny weather last month.

Half the year gone already, how time flies! Yesterday we had some lovely gentle rain nearly all day, I just hope it got through all the tree canopies and they didn’t act as umbrellas over the plants beneath. I have cut back so many weeds this last week, the garden is looking a lot better and the gardener has clipped back all the box balls so they are looking very neat and smart once more. So many new flowers are now out, I think I’ll have to do another post mid week as there are far too many for today. I will just make my six about the Day Lilies that are flowering at the moment.

The names of day lilies, or Hemerocallis, have faded over the years I’m afraid, I just enjoy them for the lovely splash of colour that they bring to the garden at this time of year.

We have had lots more hot sunshine during the week with just the odd little shower, I think it has rained a couple of times during the night, but nowhere near enough, we need more, lots more rain! I think next week looks more promising. In the meantime I’ve been deadheading and cutting off lots of weeds so they don’t go to seed, I will have to weed them out later when the soil is softer after the proper rain comes. I am also inundated with baby birds, they are eating me out of house and home, I am having to fill the feeders far more often at the moment, especially the feeder with the peanuts, the baby woodpecker is eating most of those!

We have had rain! At last we had a decent amount overnight with the promise of more to come this weekend, thank goodness. So many plants are now flowering, it was this weekend that we used to open for the NGS as the whole garden is frothing, especially the roses, colour everywhere you look. It makes it very difficult to decide what to include for my special six for today, here we go………..

I have now recovered from last weekend, and what a wonderful weekend it was, celebrating with all the family together. Thank you all for your lovely messages. Back to normal now though, watering, deadheading and weeding! The weather has been so hot since the wind changed from the east to the west, too hot to work in the afternoon so I have to start early, before breakfast , to get all done that needs doing that day. My six for this week are a bit of a mixed bag………….

Stars of the moment are the peonies. I have a few in the corner between the dining room and sitting room, it is a sun trap and the perfume in that corner is divine! This is Bowl of Beauty.

A very quick one this week, I’ve been so busy getting ready for a house full of visitors, cleaning bedrooms, making beds up and cooking for the freezer, no time for gardening this week! The family is descending on me as someone has a “Big Birthday” this weekend, a Very Big Birthday, there won’t be enough room on the cake for all the candles!

Six on Saturday, 27.5.2023.

It is nice to have it confirmed by Chelsea that my garden is the height of fashion, in vogue at the moment, I am “nurturing my wild flowers” so my garden looks “pretty but shaggy” I think that was the phrase that Joe Swift used!   Seriously though, I have enjoyed Chelsea this week, the gardens are far more natual these days with far less concrete than previous years and relate more to what we all have at home, while creating habitats for wildlife.

May Abundance.

May is on fast forward at the moment. after the cooler than usual April which has held flowers back a bit, it is all change now that we have warm sunshine every day with everything trying to flower all at once. Once again the roses have beaten the rhododendrons into flower and something new seems to have opened up each time I look out of the window. There is so much to share with you , I can’t wait for Six on Saurday, so will do a mixed bag for mid week, I’m sure there will be Six new flowers by Saturday!

I’ll start with my latest dwarf iris to flower on the scree. From a distance it just looks brown, so was disappointed whenI first saw it, but when getting closer, I could see all the lovely colours that made up the petals. Orange/red fades into almost black which is highlighted by the cheeky little blue beard, then……………..

What a wonderful week it has been, such a change from last week! This week we have had sunshine every day which has dried out the flood water nicely, only problem is that the rain plus sunshine has made the weeds grow as never before! Lots more plants are now flowering, so I won’t waste any more time, I’ll get on with showing my Six for this week.

Lots more Welsh poppies, Meconopsis cambrica, are flowering in different areas, they do shine out of the shady corners, looking like patches of sunshine.
