Brave hearts, all of them!

The garden at the moment is in a state of suspended animation. A few weeks ago we had one or two sunny days, everything started growing, sending out new shoots, and then arctic winds from Russia came and burnt everything. The plants all just look cold and fed up, they obviously regret putting out new shoots and because it is so cold there are no bees pollinating the flowers so the few that are out are lasting such a long time. To cheer myself up I went for a wander round the garden, after putting on the coat, hat, gloves, scarf etc to keep the wind at bay, to see if I could find any flowers to photograph. We are so very lucky not to have had deep snow everywhere with power lines down causing misery to everyone, farmers especially who have lost their animals in the snow drifts, that must be devastating. My first photograph is of a Camellia, Jury’s Yellow, in the woodland which is fairly sheltered compared to the rest of the garden. Usually this goes brown at the drop of a hat, but I was amazed to see that non of the flowers had been caught by the frost.

Decapitated – almost every last one!

Last week while we had torrential rain and I couldn’t get into the garden, mass decapitation was taking place in the woodland! I couldn’t believe it when I went there today to see how my snakeshead fritillaries were coming on, masses of them had no flowers at all, when the week before there were loads of buds about to open.

Fritillaria meleagris

At first glance everything looks ok, its only when you come to examine each flower that you realise something is wrong.

Half flower

This is what I found, either a flower chewed in half…….

Flower all gone

or completely gone, most were like this.

One left

There were just one or two that had escaped, thank goodness, they are all white, don’t they taste as nice I wonder?  Who had wreaked such havoc in the woodland I hear you cry…….

Pheasant

…this is the fellow who is responsible!! I have read many times that pheasants are partial to snakeshead fritillary flowers, but so far haven’t had any damage during the 22 yrs we have been here with a pheasant visiting the garden. Maybe this year we have a different one who has a sweet tooth! Is the only answer to erect a fence around the fritillaries or buy a gun, what do you think? Don’t worry, only joking about the gun!

Last yrs flowers

In the meantime I will leave you with a photo of how it should look at the moment,  this was taken last March.

I will let you know what happens, there are still a few buds, so hopefully they will be allowed to grow properly and open into beautiful flowers. I can hear him making a noise in the garden at the moment, it sounds as if he is in the woodland, maybe I will have to sit in there to protect my flowers…………. no I don’t think so, it is freezing today!!

G.B.F.D. Yet more rain.

Once again the country is either covered in snow or flooded, sounds as if last year is carrying on where it left off! We are in the southern part of the country which is flooded once more. I daren’t walk on the garden to take photos for GBFD so have had to make do with what I could get from round the house, the drive and the greenhouse. First I have the tin bath that I planted up last year with tulips, if I had put them in the ground they would certainly have rotted away by now. The leaves are telling me that all is well underneath and I can look forward to a nice display in maybe a months time.

Snow for St. Patrick?

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I got up this morning and looked out of the window…..snow, on March 17th, St Patrick’s Day! That is unheard of down here, but there was the garden covered in a thin layer of white.

All is not lost.

Freezing gales coming from Russia have changed the garden in just a couple of days from one which was looking positively spring like with all the spring flowers looking bright and perky, into one that has everything lying down and looking pathetic.

Spring lasted for 2 days!

Spring was lovely while it lasted, all of 2 days! What a difference it made, to be able to garden without a jacket, feeling the warm sunshine on your back with the birds singing away proclaiming their territory and the frogs doing what frogs do at this time of year in the pond !

Major cut backs.

No, I’m not talking about the financial situation in the country at the moment, or talking about not buying so many plants in future!  It’s the time of year to get the secateurs out and cut back lots of shrubs and coloured stems. The first plant to get the treatment is our yellow bamboo, Pleioblastus viridistriatus.

Making more snowdrops.

The time has come to make more snowdrops by splitting some of those that I already have. I think everyone would agree that this clump is in serious need of splitting.

February gardens dull…never!

For me, February means just one thing, making time to go to the little woodland at the back to see all the snowdrops that are flowering, no matter how cold it is. By the time we are half way through February, the wild single snowdrops have joined in with the doubles and ” specials “.  As well as the snowdrops there are lots of other flowers joining them by the second half of the month.

And back to Winter again. GBFD.

It really is back to winter again with the temperatures plummeting to below zero at night and feeling like it during the day, with the easterly wind. When I eventually got myself all wrapped up to take the photos for this post, it felt most strange to go into the woodland and photograph foliage,  when I was surrounded by hundreds of lovely little flowers, never mind their turn will come. To start with, I have just bought a delicious hellebore to fill a space, Winter Moonbeam, I thought that even when the plant isn’t flowering, the leaves will still look interesting.
