Another week of sunshine and showers with unusually high temperatures for this time of year. Flowers are getting harder to find to photograph, leaves are everywhere and need raking up, supposed to be good for the waistline! My six are as follows.

Two large bags of gravel arrived mid week for the new area up at the top of the garden, just all needs spreading now!

Another week gone by, a week of sunshine and showers until yesterday when the rain was decidedly torrential! At least our weatherman is happy that the reservoirs have started to full up once more after the drought of the summer. It is getting more of a challenge to find six items worth photographing for todays post but I just about managed.

No 1

Roses are still putting out more flowers, the weather is so mild for this time of year. This is Graham Thomas which always seems to be in flower, such a good rose.

Another week of sunshine and showers, the grass is very green and growing far too quickly and the plants are looking very happy indeed. Leaf colour is changing and the garden has a golden glow to it when the sun shines on the leaves. Apples need gathering in, I wish I had a young person who could climb my Bramley apple tree!

My six for this week are as follows….

A Wood Pigeon squab crash landed on the dining room windowsill the other day, such a big fluffy baby! It stayed for quite some time with its parent keeping an eye on it.

Saturday again already, it comes round far too quickly! The garden is looking very autumnal now with leaves down everywhere and only me to clear them up, plants dying back and needing cutting down soon, so there is plenty of work to do as well as still trying to improve the old veggie area. I’m getting quite a bit done in between the showers, today looks good though, should get quite a lot done today. I’ll start my Six on Saturday with my cooking apples and thereby hangs a tale!

Yesterday I collected these windfall apples and now have them in the freezer, stewed and ready for when I want to make a crumble topping.

Another month gone, summer is just a faded memory now. Autumn weather is well in charge so I’m so glad that I took my photos yesterday before all the rain arrived, although we didn’t seem to have the very strong wind that was promised, just a lot of very heavy rain. To start with I didn’t think there would be very much for me to photograph, but eventually I found rather more than expected, as well as some that should have been included last week but got missed.

Mahonia nitens Cabaret is just starting to open its flowers, from lovely red buds to yellow/orange flowers.

At this time of year my thoughts turn to making sure that I have plenty of food in the garden for the birds. Berries are ripening nicely on shrubs and roses, but I know they will soon be eaten once they are ripe, they don’t think to keep some for later!

The pyracantha by the front gate is the first to show the colour of its berries. The birds will soon strip this bush once they start, mainly blackbirds and thrushes.

Cyclamen and Colchicums

Bulbs popping up and flowering at this time of year always seem extra special. One minute there isn’t any sign of what’s to come, then suddenly, there they are, flowering away and looking lovely. The Cyclamen always come first, starting to flower in August, then come September and the Colchicums join in.

Lovely dark pink variety of cyclamen. This dark one has now started seeding around so quite a few seedlings are now spreading in the woodland.

After an historically momentous week here in the UK , I feel that I’m ready to get back to normal and tackle SOS once again. Lets face it, I can remember the late King dying ( I was 9 yrs old) and the Coronation of our dear Queen, neighbours bought a little TV and we all sat round the tiny screen to watch it. I have to face the fact that I am now classed as old by the media!

After a couple of weeks of rain , everything is recovering and flowering once more. It is also time for tidying up and clipping back. The news is that the farmer has cut his field of maize so the squirrels aren’t going to be happy, no free meals any more!

I’ve rather a change with my 6 photos this week, they could be subtitled “The Mystery of the Maize Thief”.

Looking at my garden, following the clues and working out who has been stealing the maize from the farmer’s field next door is like following the clues in a murder mystery, without the murder, thank goodness!

Clue no 1. I recognised this as the top of a cob of maize. This was found just my side of the hedge with the maize field the other side.

We have had a little bit of drizzle for a few minutes this week, but at least the temperature has dropped and I think that it is this that has made the garden feel a lot better, and the gardener! I started off last week with a photo of the Amelanchier tree in full autumn colour, this week it is bare, all the leaves have dropped and been swept away with the lawn mower. I spent one day sweeping all the horse chestnut and Acer leaves up that were on the back lawn and it looks a lot better. The horse chestnuts are now finished for this year, this has never happened in August in previous years. Surprisingly the roses seem to have recovered so I will start with a couple of photos of those…….

Rosa Graham Thomas is now covered again in lovely fat buds and has started flowering once more.
