Narcissus started flowering a month ago and it was as if someone had picked up yellow pigment on a brush and washed it over half the garden. Where we used to have white everywhere from the snowdrops, it is now changed to sunshine yellow. Gradually , as the weeks go by, the colour changes once more – they are joined by narcissus which are yellow and white, then finally by those which are all white. Colours in the garden are changing all the time.
And still they come.
Wave after wave of beautiful flowers in such a mixture of colours, it seems a never ending rainbow is marching across the garden
Memories of a robin.
It has slowly dawned on us during February and March, that “our” robin is no longer with us.
What’s new this week.
Lots more buds have now opened to join in the frenzy of flowers telling us that spring has definitely arrived. Walking round the garden, there is always something new to see each day.
Major cut backs.
No, I’m not talking about the world financial situation, nor am I talking about reducing the number of plants that I buy. I’m talking about pruning the roses and the clematis and cutting back the coloured stems which have been giving the garden areas of interest over the winter. It is so easy to talk about all the beautiful, wonderful flowers that are popping up all over the place, but there is work to be done !!
Heavenly Hellebores.
At last the hellebores are all out, the lovely sunshine and warmer temperatures last week have encouraged them to open up and the bees are making the most of every opportunity for a good feed.
Has Spring arrived ?
It is wonderful to be able to work in the woodland with no overcoat. The sun is so hot, it is almost T shirt weather – well maybe not just yet!!
Snowdrop Pilgrimage
At last I managed to persuade my husband that he really wanted to go and see the snowdrop collection at Colesbourne Park in Gloucestershire, and what a wonderful day it turned out to be. Weather was a bit dull and dreary, but at least it wasn’t raining, it was a bit wet underfoot, thank goodness we had taken our wellies! After a lovely lunch at the Colesbourne Inn (best to book, we got the last table) we arrived at the Park at 1pm. just as it was opening. This was the view that greeted us from the car park, thousands and thousands of snowdrops, I just couldn’t wait to start exploring!
Early Flowering Companions
Snowdrops have been centre stage for some time now and beautiful though they are, there are lots of other flowers now blooming away, doing their best to attract the bees that are brave enough to venture out in our winter weather. The main colour that is showing at the moment is still such a lot of white, but now with touches of yellow, blue, purple and pink.
Sunshine and Snowdrops
What a difference a bit of sunshine makes – after a week of much milder weather, today the sun is shining, the snowdrops have now opened and are now showing the different markings on their inner petals. Spring is definitely in the air at the moment and the flowers in the shady half of the garden brighten up all the dark corners and make the most of the sunshine coming through the trees, before the leaves come and put them in the shade once more.
