We have had a sunny but cold, windy week, getting warmer as the week has progressed, also the east wind has eased off so it is much more pleasant working in the garden. The flowers continue to open and the foliage is so delighful, so many shades of green, it is amazing.

Meconopsis cambrica

Meconopsis cambrica or the Welsh poppy is my first flower this week, it pops up in the most unlikely places, I never know where it will come up, but always welcome.

Primula veris, red shades.

My red Cowslip is now more or less fully out. I haven’t seen any seedlings round about so it doesn’t seem as vigorous as its wild cousin or maybe it is sterile and I’ll have to split it to increase it.

Primula veris

As you can see the straight Primula veris, cow parsley, seeds about with gay abandon, making a nice show wherever they land.

Viburnum plicatum Mariesii.

The Vibernums are starting to flower, this one is Viburnum plicatum Mariesii and the whole bush will soon be covered in flowers.

Orchid seedling.

My orchid has appeared again in my meadow. It spent the winter sitting in the flood water and I noticed the leaves starting to form at the beginning of this month. Hopefully by June I will have a couple of lovely orchid flowers.

Acer.

To end with I have a new little Acer up at the top of the garden and what lovely spring colour it has, I seem to remember that it has gorgeous colour in the autumn too. I don’t know its name, I think the squirrels have made away with the label!

More gardening and tidying has been done each day but there is still lots more to do and with all the fine weather there is watering of pots to add to the list. Thanks go to Jim at Garden Ruminations for hosting, do pay him a visit if you would like to see gardens from around the world.

Snap with the Meconopsis cambrica! The red Cowslip is very pretty and I’m glad to see the Orchid has reappeared.

I was so pleased when I spotted the orchid had suvived the winter Graeme, I was worried at one time when I saw how much standing water there was but it obviously likes it!

  2. Helen Jones says:

The acer is such a gorgeous colour. I’m looking forward to seeing the orchid in a couple of months’ time.

    • Pauline says:

Me too Helen, I think there will be 2 flower spikes, the same as last year. Other flowers are now starting to show themselves in the meadow, they will keep the orange tip butterfly happy.

What a fantastic coloured acer ! I smiled when I read that the squirrel had played with the label. Is that possible where you live? Here, the wind blows them off or the frost breaks them.
    Lovely meconopsis too !

    • Pauline says:

Glad you like the Acer Fred, it is rather a lovely colour isn’t it? Yes, squirrels mess around with the plant labels here, I found holes near to the acer where they have been digging up acorns that they had buried.

  4. Kathrin S says:

Lovely that the iris has come back. I look forward to seeing it in bloom later in the year.
The poppy and red cowslip are also very pretty. I do love poppies and hope to have many growing in our garden.

It is an orchid Katherine that suddenly popped up a few years ago now and I’m so glad when it returns each year after sitting in water all winter. I love poppies too, hope to have lots more later.

  5. Wow, that Acer is delicate and lovely, isn’t it? Very nice. The Welsh Poppy is so bright and sunny! And how wonderful to have an Orchid appear in your meadow.

    • Pauline says:

The little Acer is a lovely colour Beth, shows such promise for when it grows. This is the third year that the orchid has appeared so it looks as though it has come to stay, wonderful!

  6. Cathy says:

I haven’t seen a Welsh poppy here for a year or two, I think – I always try to snap their heads off before they seed in the vain hope of eradicating them (it’s the yellow)!! 😀I love to see a red cowslip – how exciting to have one in your garden! And your orchid too 👍

  7. Elizabeth says:

Love the red cowslips – I have never seen them that color. The orchid is special – loking forward to seeing it bloom!
