Another week with hardly any rain, just a bit of drizzle and still lots of sunshine. We will hopefully be getting some rain next week, but our weather forecaster still says that it won’t be enough. Wandering round yesterday to take my photographs, I was very concious of how brown my garden has become, some plants are still doing very well but some are definitely suffering. One of the plants that are doing well are the roses, so that is what I have photographed for this weeks six.

Rosa Abraham Darby in the front garden has been opening lots of flowers recently, he is a good one.

Also in the front garden is the little floribunda rose Bonica which has been grown from cuttings that I took from the original one, it doesn’t seem to mind the heat at all.

Rosa The Dark Lady seems to just keep on giving. Each time I walk up the garden to the top, she is opening more flowers, maybe she benefits from being in shade for most of the morning. I couldn’t help but admire her beautiful foliage!

David Austins rose Evelyn is still opening new flowers but they are much smaller than usual, they still have the same perfume though.

The Dunwich Rose which we bought after we had a holiday many years ago in the village of Dunwich in East Anglia seems very happy in the spot where it is planted and coping well with the weather.

I have seedling Michaelmas daisies popping up between all my roses and the colours go so well together. All the clumps have masses of tiny bees and flies visiting them, they are good pollinator plants.

I have been surprised how some plants are copling so well as they haven’t had any extra water, the hardy fuchsias are doing really well, maybe they will feature next week!

Thanks to Jim at Garden Ruminations for hosting once more.

Such beautiful roses, I have one or two offering a small second flush.

  2. Noelle says:

Lovely to see your roses doing well, mine have just about survived though not flowering. Lets hope we all get some rain next week.

  3. Jude says:

You have some lovely roses, Bonica is very bonny indeed. Rain forecast just a we go away to see family in the east. Oh well, at least the garden won’t suffer whilst I am away. Hopefully!

    • Pauline says:

Hopefully your garden will be well watered by the time you return Jude!I have grown 6 Bonica cuttings from my original one, this was about 30 yrs ago, so they are doing very well!

  4. Helen Jones says:

Such beautiful roses, I love the Dunwich rose in particular. I have a climbing rose which has repeatedly flowered throughout the summer, it hasn’t been watered at all so yes, I think roses are a pretty good bet for our drier climate these days.

    • Pauline says:

Thank you Helen, The Dunwich rose reminds me of a lovely holiday each time I see it in flower. It does help that certain plants never need watering!

  5. Graeme says:

A beautiful selection of roses. They seem to be coping fine without the rain here too. I’ve been a bit more heavy handed with the watering these past few days hoping we get some of the promised rain next week – although whenever rain has been forecast these past few months it hasn’t come to much!

    • Pauline says:

We are the same as you Graeme, waiting for the promised rain and it never comes! It’s nice that some plants don’t need to be molly coddled!

  6. Fred says:

A Six all in roses (except the last one)! What a magnificent choice of roses you made this week. Some of mine have had a second life after the heatwave and are blooming again at the moment.

    • Pauline says:

I think we are all going to have to find which plants can cope with the increased heat Fred, without needing extra watering. It’s good to know that some plants are coping very well indeed. I’m glad yours are reblooming!

  7. Cathy says:

Does Bonica have a fragrance, Pauline? It’s good to have roses flowering again, but those that have been going throughout the summer are especially amazing!

    • Pauline says:

Bonica just has a faint perfume Cathy, nothing like the David Austin roses! It’s good to know that some plants can take all this heat.

  8. That is fortunate that your Roses are still so happy, and wow, you have a beautiful collection. Whenever I see a collection of Roses, I realize that I can never pick a favorite. They are all so fascinating and special. Thanks for sharing!

    • Pauline says:

We actually had a lot of rain last night Beth, so I’m sure the roses and other plants are very happy once more. Roses seem to like my heavy soil and have always done quite well here.
