Another week has gone by with hardly any rain, just a bit of drizzle on a couple of days, but I believe that we are due some proper rain tomorrow, I really hope it arrives. Last weekend was taken up with a visit from my latest grandson and his parents. He is now walking and into Everything, we needed eyes in the back of our heads! He really enjoyed walking round the garden and treated the flowers with respect, which was lovely. Anyway, on with SOS with this weeks offering………….

The seedhead of Peony mlokosewitschii which flowered in the spring. These are not viable seeds, they would have to be black to be viable.

Roses are having a second flowering in spite of hardly any rain, this is Gertrude Jekyll.

and this one is The Dark Lady.

Crocosmias are flowering happily, they obviously can manage with not much moisture. This one was given to me by a friend when she was splitting hers, so no name I’m afraid.

Crocosmia solfaterre is at the top of the garden by the pergola. This crocosmia has brownish green leaves.

Stipa gigantea is coping just as well as it usually does, it should be enjoying the dry heat!

My blue Agapanthus have now joined with the white ones by the front drive. These are smaller and don’t flop as much, the white ones seem to have very heavy heads.

Humulus lupulus aureus is growing over the arbour in the back garden. These are the male flowers, so don’t form the hops which make beer, I dudn’t realise when I bought it many years ago that I needed a female plant!

Perovskia is flowering in the back garden in the sunshine, another plant that flops, I wish it didn’t.

It is good that some flowers are coping very well with the heat and drought. I am struggling with the watering due to arthritis in my hands so really hope for some proper rain for the garden, otherwise I think there will be quite a few losses. If you want to see what other gardeners have flowering then do pop over to Jim at Garden Ruminations where I’m sure there will be plenty for you to enjoy.

Interesting about the Peony seeds, I once tried growing them from seed, but didn’t know what I was doing and they failed.

Looking through the window I can see that my Gertie appears to have another bud! It’s a struggle to get close to her to do any deadheading at the moment so she is left to her own devices. I can sympathise with the arthritis, my troubles back in 2023 seem to have gone away thank goodness, but I do still get some issues with my right hand, making a fist and gripping things. I tend to use the hose pipe in the garden rather than watering cans which are a bit too heavy.

I hear myself, in my head, saying aww when you speak of your grandson – it’s a joy to see them beginning to understand the special things of the world around them. Those are memories to be treasured. Good old Gertrude – always a reliable garden beauty. I’m waiting for another flush of her lovely flowers, but it’s slow. The blue Agapanthus is looking good! I can’t lift the watering can around the garden any more either, Pauline. I use the hose, and if I want to liquid feed the plants, I take the hose to the plant and mix the solution there, then on to the next. No use if you have a hose ban in your area though! I hope the rain arrives for you tomorrow.

Gertrude is such a good Rose. She’s begun to flower again here too!

Love your Gertrude Jeckyll, she really is a very worthy rose! ⚘💞 Perovskia is always a treat at this time of year.

  6. Wow, the Roses are gorgeous! And the other plants look happy and beautiful, too. Thanks for sharing the information and the photos of the Peony mlokosewitschii seedheads. Have a great week!
