Six on Saturday. 17.05.2025

Another week has flown by with more sunshine and no more rain until, hopefully, next weekend. There were so many flowers all calling to have their photo taken yesterday, which to use and which to leave out, that is the question! Let’s make a start……….

It’s now Rhododendron time, I think this is R
Percy Wiseman, looking rather lovely.

A Japanese Azalea on the rockery has opened a few buds to show flowers of all one colour rather than the pink and white that they should be.

Allium Purple Sensation are now opening in the borders. Their spherical heads contrast with everything around them.

Roses are also starting to flower, this one is Gertrude Jekyll which has a beautiful perfume.

Another early flowering rose is R. Buff Beauty which I grew from a cutting about 30 yrs ago!

Libertia grandiflora which is up by the pond, making a nice splash of white in the distance which I can see from the house.

I think this is Clematis Lasurstern, the previous people planted it up the drainpipe by the conservatory.

English Iris or Iris latifolia, growing at the side of the driveway, it seems to like my heavy clay soil, thank goodness!

That’s it for this week, the weeds are still growing, the pots still need watering, so much to do but not the energy to do it all, I might catch up one day! To see more spring flowers do pop over to Jim at Garden Ruminations where there will be plenty to see.

What a beauty Rhododendron ‘Percy Wiseman’ is. The problem with Six on Saturday, Pauline, is that I see too many plants that I’ve never considered for my garden and suddenly they become ‘must-haves’. Percy is one of those. The lovely R. ‘Gertrude Jekyll is everyone’s must-have, and I have two, neither appearing inclined to flower yet. That’s a very pretty clematis growing up the drainpipe.

    • Pauline says:

Thanks Catherine! It’s so tempting isn’t it when you see lovely plants on other blogs, I have to try and be firm with myself! The roses seem to start flowering earlier and earlier each year, I’m sure it used to be June in the past.

  2. Gill Heavens says:

It is all kicking off! Love the iris, blue is a favourite colour of mine, these look beautiful compared to my measily one bloom. Your roses are a treat, I will have to have a word with my Gertie, she just has a few buds, no flowers yet. All lovely. Have a great week.

    • Pauline says:

Blue is my favourite colour too Gill, the English iris seem to like my heavy soil, glad something does! Once the roses start flowering they keep me busy deadheading!

  3. Chloris says:

I love your rhododendrons. And the roses are early aren’t they? What a wonderful time of year. Your garden must be looking fabulous with so many treasures

  4. Rosie Amber says:

So many pretties, I do love the colours of the Rhododendron, I’ve not seen one like that before.

  5. Elizabeth says:

My mom grew Buff Beauty and loved it a lot. She had maybe 200 varieties of rose – I wonder if the new owner kept any of them.

  6. Graeme says:

The Rhododendron & Azalea are such great colours. Gerty has just started flowering here too! A lovely selection – those English Irises look fab in the sun.

    • Pauline says:

Rhododendrons and Azaleas certainly brighten up the garden Graeme making splashes of colour everywhere and once the roses start, there is colour all through the summer.

  7. Helen Jones says:

All very pretty, Pauline, especially “Percy Wiseman”.

  8. Rick says:

The colour of the rhododendron is striking. Unfortunately my alliums seemed to have died out with just a few green shoots emerging this year and no flowers.

    • Pauline says:

Glad you like the rhododendron Rick, a wonderful time of year when they all start flowering, you will see more in weeks to come! Sorry to hear your alliums seem to have died out, I usually add a few new ones each year in case any don’t come back in my heavy soil.

  9. Fred says:

This pretty clematis looks a bit like the one I presented this week. Perhaps a slightly paler blue? In any case, this week, I do like the azalea you presented to us too, but especially the very pretty Rhodo ‘Percy Wiseman’

    • Pauline says:

The clematis was already here 35 yrs ago Fred so I’m guessing its name. More Rhodos to come next week hopefully, they are all starting to flower now.

  10. Ha! I enjoyed the intro to your post…the plants calling out to be included. 🙂 They are lovely, and we have some similar things blooming here, including the Irises, Clematises, and Alliums. Your Roses are beautiful! Have a great gardening week!

    • Pauline says:

Glad you liked the selection this week Beth and yes, it was hard to choose which to show you! Lovely time of year with so many plants flowering.
