Another week has flown by and brought all sorts of weather with it. We have had some heavy downpours, some gentle rain, very strong winds and some sunny, warm days with a lovely breeze! All the birds have had their babies and are bringing them to the feeders, I’m having to replenish them every other day. I got rather wet yesterday wandering round to get my photos for this post, so let me show you the Six families that I found.

First of all I photographed the peonies that had opened since last week. This lovely one is Cora Louise, she, poor thing, got battered by the wind and rain and didn’t last very long, thank goodness I photographed her earlier in the week.So beautiful but I will have to now wait another year to see her again and enjoy her beautiful perfume!

The next family to catch my attention were a couple of clematis, this one is C. Pagoda, a very dainty clematis, compared to some, very pretty with lots of nodding bell like flowers.

I think this one is Rouge Cardinal and I think I must have forgotten to prune it back in March, mind you I did all the others quickly when I had just returned from hospital, no wonder if I forgot this one! This one is on the arbour in the back garden and doesn’t normally flower so soon.

The rose family is always grabbing my attention at this time of year, once deadheading is necessary. This is Liverpool Hope, such a lovely rose.

I think this is the best year yet for the rose over the archway going into the woodland. Rosa Snow Goose is full of flowers and even though it is a rambler, will carry on flowering all summer.

I couldn’t miss the next family, they advertise their presence with the most beautiful perfume which wafts across the garden, Philadelphus coronarius Aureus is in the back border.

another Philadelphus , this time Belle Etoile, is in the bed round the dead oak in the middle of the garden. Both of these really stop me in my tracks!

I have a massive Phormium Yellow Wave in the gravel area in the back garden which is now flowering, huge flowers, about twice as tall as me, so these flower spikes were photographed from upstairs!

Someone had a birthday this week and my daughter came down from Bristol for the day. We had a wonderful time, in spite of the weather, we have become “ladies who lunch”! Among lots of other presents she gave me these beautiful peonies, which I think are Coral Charm with a beautiful perfume, what a wonderful daughter!
Most of my roses and all the peonies have been chosen for their perfume as well as their looks, when you add the Philadelphus to the mix, the garden is a delight to the nose as well as the eye! Perfume wafts on the breeze or is trapped in sheltered corners and is always a lovely unexpected surprise.
For more early summer flowers, do pop over to Jim at Garden Ruminations where you will see what other gardeners are enjoying at the moment.
What an amazing bouquet, what a wonderful daughter. Happy birthday to you! You have some lovely flowers, I really couldn’t pick a favourite, well perhaps the yellow rose, or maybe Rouge Cardinal or ……. Have a great week 😀
Thanks Gill, I try not to count the years as they go by now!
What a great photo of Liverpool Hope and a lovely name for it too.
My late husband was Liverpool born and bred Rosie, so bought it to remind me of him, not that I would ever forget him!
We’ve had similar weather here Pauline. Husband & I have been out this morning adding stakes to the three roses in large pots that have been rocking badly after the most recent winds.
Your six families are all beauties. I love the colour and shape of the flowers of C. Rouge Cardinal’ and Rosa ‘The Countryman’, looks glorious. That’s one I haven’t come across, but I’d happily have it in my rose bed. Your two Philadelphus are also gorgeous. My ‘Snowbelle’ is in bloom at the moment, I should try to get some photos before it’s gone or damaged. Enjoy the week ahead, I hope your weather improves.
Happy Belated Birthday!
What lovely comments Catherine, thank you so much. There is so much to enjoy in the garden at the moment, hard to take it all in.
I imagine the wonderful scent of the philadelphus… happy belated birthday 💐
The Philadelphus perfume is quite something Fred, as I’m wandering round the garden.
Belated happy birthday! The peonies your daughter brought you are lovely, but so are all the plants in your garden.
The peonies my daughter brought have now changed colour to a pale butter yellow, amazing what flowers can do!
Oh yes, I remember you and the |Golfer almost share a birthday – sounds like you had a great day, and what a lovely bouquet of peonies! It was a lovely to see all your families. I have not come across R Countryman before – he looks and sounds lovely! How tall does C Pagoda grow?
C Pagoda grows to about 8 ft Cathy, I have it up an obelisk which isn’t really tall enough, so it climbs to the top, then just flops down again!
Hi Pauline, I do love the peonies. Such usual flowers and colours.
Thanks Piglet, nice to hear from you!
Beautiful families. I love that bouquet and happy birthday to you! What a wonderful time of year for a birthday. Hopefully the weather is going to warm up again soon and we can get out to enjoy our gardens again.
Raining hard at the moment Jude, but I’m sure it will stop soon and I can get out into the garden again!
I could almost smell the fragrances, it really must be nice. The roses are trying here, but I still need to add the mock orange. For some reason it’s so hard to find a fragrant one here, even harder to find one that’s an actual shrub and not a dwarfed mound!
The two Philadelphus that I have Frank are certainly proper shrubs as tall as me, plus a bit. I look forward to the perfume each year and am never disappointed.
Happy Belated Birthday! We have some of the same things blooming, including ‘Sarah Bernhardt’ Peonies, Mock Orange, and soon…various roses. It’s a wonderful garden time of year. Lovely plants, lovely photos!
Thank you Beth! As you say, it is a wonderful time of year with everything bursting forth once more, so much for us to enjoy!
