Great Weston Ride.

Today was the day that the family has been working towards for some time now. The Great Weston Ride is from Bristol to Weston Super Mare,  57 miles,  raising funds for Prostate Cancer UK.  Our daughter and family between them have raised over £890 in sponsorship and when tax from Gift Aid is added, it will be well over £1,000, well done guys, fantastic effort!

At the finish line!

At the finish line!

Gold medal !

Unknown to them, the undergardener and I decided to travel to Weston Super Mare and wait for them on the finishing line. While waiting for them we cheered and clapped everyone who finished, there were some who were quite old and some who were very young.

Exhausted but happy together.

As I said,  we hadn’t told anyone that we would be in Weston. As they all crossed the finishing line we were cheering like mad, they turned round and it dawned on them who was making all the noise….and our daughter burst into tears on seeing us! I felt the least we could do was to be there to thank them for cycling all that way to raise so much money for Prostate Cancer UK.

A special son in law.

A special son in law.

It wasn’t just the undergardener that has been going through treatment for Prostate Cancer, our sil’s father is also undergoing treatment, so they had 2 grandpas to cycle for.

A welcome drink.

A well deserved drink.

Grandson no 1  is 14 yrs old, would you believe he has sports day at school tomorrow!

Well done T.

Well done T. we appreciate everything you have done.

Grandson no 2, who is 12,  was the one who sorted out the families training schedule, it worked N. you did a really good job getting everyone fit!

A well deserved medal.

A well deserved medal.

The forecast was for rain, cloudy, windy so we took waterproofs, umbrellas, jackets etc. and just look at the weather, what a wonderful blue sky. Did I have any suncream…..no, I think we might be a bit burnt tomorrow! We are so proud of our family, training so hard so that they would be able to take part in the Great Weston Ride and raise  much needed funds for Prostate Cancer UK.  Well done guys,  you are all fantastic !!!

Mum, it was so lovely to see you both there to cheer us on at the end, it meant such a lot to all of us – thank you. I’m so pleased we were able to raise so much for Prostate Cancer UK – it was a pleasure to do it xx

    • Pauline says:

Hi Rachael, I’m glad we were able to surprise you, it was the least we could do after all the training you had done and then the cycle ride itself. The amount of money you have raised is amazing, congratulations to all of you! I wonder what the final overall figure will be?

  2. snowbird says:

Wow! Well done and congratulations to all of them, that is a princely sum and a fantastic achievement for such a worthwhile cause! How lovely that you got to surprise them all at the finishing line….you have a family to be proud of!xxx

    • Pauline says:

Yes Dina, we are very proud of them all, what they achieved today was quite wonderful. They also put so much time and effort into their training, they were determined that they would succeed and they did!

  3. Rosemarie Eccleston says:

I think it was a brilliant thing for them to do and lovely that you could be there at the finish!

    • Pauline says:

Didn’t they do well Rosemarie, we are so proud of them! I’m so glad that we went to cheer them over the finishing line, it gave us a good opportunity for a chat about route and the hills they had to climb!

  4. susie says:

Congratulations to you and the entire family.

  5. rusty duck says:

That is a truly fantastic effort, well done Team Family!!

  6. Matt says:

What a fantastic effort and a great result! Congratulations to all the family

  7. Caro says:

What a brilliant effort! I do so admire people who put their energy into helping others, and that was an amazing success. They must have been so exhausted but proud of their achievements at the end. Well done and many congratulations to your family!

    • Pauline says:

They did do well didn’t they Caro, they were exhausted, but so happy to have achieved their goal! My daughter says that next year she thinks she might have a coffee morning instead, I somehow feel that the family might have other ideas!

  8. Anna says:

Oh what a special day for all of you Pauline and many congratulations to your family on their achievement. You and your husband must be so proud of them. It’s great when people give up their time and effort to fundraise. Who knows – maybe your grandsons could be Tour de France competitors in the making.

    • Pauline says:

It was a very special day for us all Anna, and we are so proud of them all. Our younger grandson is very sporty, playing lots of football and basketball, so he was the one who got the rest of the family nice and fit, I think they all did amazingly well. I will pass on your suggestion of the Tour de France, it would be amazing if one of them did something like that!

  9. Frank says:

That’s fantastic. Great job and congratulations to the bikers!
What a nice surprise you have at the end. I bet that meant a lot as well 🙂

    • Pauline says:

They did so well, with both the cycling and their sponsorship, we are so proud of them all! It certainly was a surprise when they saw us, their reaction made the journey up the motorway so worthwhile.

  10. Darren says:

Just wanted to add my congratulations and thanks to you all – as you rightly say, a phenomenal effort both ON and OFF the bike by the whole family. Delighted that they chose to take the GWR challenge, and really appreciate the tremendous fundraising effort. To date we’ve helped to raise over £105,000 for PCUK (and £160K for charity as a whole) and we look forward to adding substantially to these figures this year with the help of people like your lovely family. Oh, and it’s a fine report, too – love the pics!

    • Pauline says:

Thank you so much Darren for your message, lovely to hear from you. My husband was given the “all clear” by the hospital in Exeter just a few weeks ago, so it was wonderful for the family to be able to help raise much needed funds for PCUK.

  11. paul burgess says:

Fantastic achievement, very well done to you all.It was a wonderful ride and the weather was at its best…..See you next year??…..

    • Pauline says:

Good to hear from you Paul, it was a wonderful day wasn’t it! The weather couldn’t have been better and the younger members of the family did ever so well. We’ll have to see about next year, it all depends on our daughter and family!

  12. Helle says:

What a fantastic effort by the whole family including your cheering them on at the finish line. Also good to hear the undergardener has gotten the all clear, that must be a huge relief.
Hope you get some rain soon, we also keep missing out and it is getting a bit critical for some plants.

    • Pauline says:

They did do well, didn’t they Helle! It was such a big relief when the undergardener was told that his cancer had gone completely, he will have to have regular blood tests to make sure it isn’t coming back, but that is a small price to pay.
We had a wonderful day yesterday, it rained hard all day and the garden is looking so much better already!

  13. Peter/Outlaw says:

Congratulations to your family for a job well done and kudos to you for surprising them with your presence at the finish line. Very special!

    • Pauline says:

Thank you Peter, they did do so well! They haven’t stopped cycling, they’ve been going out in the evenings after work/school, even in the rain, I think they’re hooked on cycling now!
