Bath Bulbs.

The bulbs in the little tin bath that I planted up in the winter has just about reached it’s peak now, with I think, all the bulbs flowering.

They started flowering on March 13th.

They started flowering at the beginning of March.

All the crocus were free with the Iris.

All the crocus were free with the half price  Iris.

The blue Iris are a beautiful colour, but they were supposed to be purple Pauline!

I kept waiting for a purple one to appear....

and at last, we have a couple of purples!

and at last, we have a few purples!

Then some of the yellow crocus opened up lilac.

The large leaves are from some tulips that somehow got left behind when I cleared the bath out last year.

So here we have it, I think all the bulbs are flowering now.

A few days later though, we had more purple Pauline's than anything else, ah well, we got there in the end!

I decided in the end that it didn’t matter what colour the bulbs came up, they all looked lovely together and really brighten up a dull day. When they have finished flowering, I will move them and plant them on the side of the ditch into the woodland where they can hopefully create a spring carpet of colour in the years to come.

Wishing you and your families a very Happy Easter.

Such bright and lovely colours. I also reuse my iris bulbs afterwards, and they always bloom again. I have planted crocus, violas and some primulas i one of my tin baths.
My husband just washed down the greenhouse, and now I can get on with the sowing of annuals.

It’s always good to plant the bulbs into the garden Gitte, mine usually come up the next year, it would be a waste to put them on the compost heap! You have a good husband, to wash the greenhouse for you!

  2. AnnetteM says:

A lovely show! At least they were all out together!

  3. Sally says:

Beautiful! So many colors. It’s fun to have a surprise every now and then. The blue Irises are lovely but, the purple take the prize!

    • Pauline says:

Yes Sally, I quite like surprises! The blue is such a beautiful bright blue and contrasts so well with the crocus, they will look lovely next year on the bank by the woodland but hopefully will flower at the correct time as I was very late planting them in the bath.

Looks wonderful! Here you don’t see tin baths, but you do see aluminum stock tanks that you can buy at farm supply stores. I suppose metal buckets would work as well. I’ve thought idly of getting some for the garden, but haven’t taken any action.

    • Pauline says:

The bath is just a bit older than me Jason, probably bought when my brother was born, no plastics in those days, we are talking nearly 75 yrs ago! It amuses me to see the fashion for tin baths and pails being sold now as planters, at one time it was all you could get.

  5. Susie says:

Beautiful display. I like to control the colors but in spring it’s hard to find any that don’t work together well. Happy Easter Pauline.

    • Pauline says:

Spring is a wonderful time of year, colour doesn’t seem to matter Susie, it’s all such a glorious tapestry!
Happy Easter Susie, I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

  6. Anna says:

How pretty Pauline. What will go in next when you ditch the present occupants? A Happy Easter to you and the Undergardener too.

    • Pauline says:

I haven’t really decided what will follow on Anna, it was going to be tulips which are waiting in their pots, but I think they are going to be flowering before the iris and crocus have finished! I’ll have to think again!

  7. Alain says:

I have three tin pails. I should try something like this. I have always been hesitant to use solid pots as I am afraid our winter would break them. But tin would be fine.

I love the color combination! This was a great idea, and no doubt they will grow and spread once you set them out in the garden. Happy Easter!

    • Pauline says:

I’m sure they will be very happy to be set free in the garden Deb, and then it won’t matter so much what colour they are, anything is welcome!
