Peony Heaven again!

I am wallowing in Peony heaven again, thanks once more to my lovely daughter. Last week was my birthday and another amazing bouquet arrived in the post from her, you may remember the post I wrote last time, here, this time though with white single peony flowers.

When they arrived they were in tight bud about half the size of a golf ball, but after 3 days, they had opened up fully and as well as being a delight for the eyes, the perfume is a delight for the nose, it is wonderful!

I  spent a couple of days last weekend with my daughter and family, my birthday was midweek, and I had a really wonderful time with them all. The meals were all delicious, my birthday gateaux absolutely wonderful, it was much more than a cake and there were far too many candles on the top. Not nearly the correct number though, there wasn’t room, and when you get to the wrong side of 75, you stop counting, or I have anyway!

Also waiting for me was an absolutely fabulous book all about peonies, the photos are exquisite, I would love them all in the garden. I had previously made a list of the varieties that I would like, I was now able to edit the list to varieties with beautiful perfume.

I was now able to look and see if I could identify the peonies in my bouquet, I think they may be Jan van Leeuwen, they look very similar.

There was more to come, I was then taken to their local garden centre to have a look around (it would have been rude to have refused wouldn’t it) and guess what we found there, loads of peonies, we found one with lots of shoots called Peony  Bouchela which is a double pink one.

My daughter googled it on her phone and found that the Perfumier, Jo Malone, uses this one in making their perfume, so if it good enough for the perfume industry, it is certainly good enough for me and came home with me, courtesy of my daughter. She gave me a wonderful peony inspired few days which will continue while my flowers are perfuming my sitting room.

It is now 5 days since my flowers arrived, I have a feeling that I will be taking as many photos as I did last time as they are getting better day by day.

Absolute Heaven, thank you Rachael.

The peonies are still going strong Dina, over a week later, such wonderful cut flowers. Thank you for your birthday wishes, I really enjoyed being with my family over the weekend, I don’t see them often enough!

Happy birthday! Those white Peonies look just like my favorite variety, which is called ‘Snow Swan’ and just started blooming in earnest. Your remark about the excess of candles reminds me of a story concerning my wife’s great aunt. She was rather vain and always lied about her age, eventually bullying my MIL’s mother into also lying about her age, so they could keep their stories straight. However, my MIL’s mother could not keep up and she ended up as the older sister, at least in public, though she was actually born the younger sister. There was quite the mess when my wife’s great aunt had to apply for Social Security!

    • Pauline says:

Thank you Jason! I couldn’t help but laugh at your story about your wife’s great aunt, it comes to us all though eventually, we can’t avoid how old we are.

It was a lovely day when the flowers arrived Cathy and the weekend really couldn’t have been better, it was a wonderful time. I’ve just had a look at the peonies and I think they will last for another couple of days, 12 days is pretty good I think.
