Just a sprinkling.

When I woke up this morning, I was very surprised to find that it was white everywhere. Just a sprinkling, but very crisp, we must have had a hard frost after the snow had finished. Snowdrops and hellebores had collapsed and were lying on the ground, but now 5 hours later, the sun is shining, the grass is green once more and the flowers have recovered. Here are a few photos to show that we did actually have some snow, even though it didn’t last very long.

The snow picks out the hard shapes as well as making the garden look totally different for a short time. At least with the snow, the weeds weren’t so obvious!

As we live on the side of a hill, venturing out by car this morning was a bit of an experience. The whole road was like an ice rink, it doesn’t get gritted as it is just a very little minor road, but I got up it by taking it very slowly and was soon onto the main road which was totally clear, having been gritted overnight. I think we are back to more showers this afternoon and overnight, I can cope with rain showers as long as they don’t turn to snow!

Your light frosting of snow was quite lovely! I like how the snow emphasizes the shapes of the evergreens. We have had one real snowfall this winter, plus another one much like the one you show in this post. That is enough for me. Now I want spring! Glad you were safe on the roads. That is always an issue for us when it snows, since our city doesn’t have snow equipment. Usually everyone who can stays home and takes a holiday.

It is pretty and I do enjoy it, but just for a very short time Deb! We don’t usually have much snow down in the SW of the country, but further north has had it bad all through January and now again this month, they must be really fed up with it.

I much prefer rain to snow too, although it does make everything look pretty for a little while. I used to live where we got a lot more snow and I hated driving in it.

When we used to live in the N W of England Alison, we had much more snow than we do here. I haven’t had to drive on snow for almost 30 years, I’m out of practise!

As you say Pauline a light sprinkling of snow does much to enhance the winter garden. I am always amazed at the power of recovery shown by the snowdrops and the hellebores. I have seen them here rally after lying under deep snow and cold temperatures. I don’t envy you driving in the snow…. at least here we have winter tyres!

    • Pauline says:

Yes Denise, the flowers are amazing the way they recover after snow and ice. No such luxury as winter tyres here, although I think Scotland and the north of England could do with them this winter! I was just glad that no one was coming down the hill as I was driving up!

Your box balls looks crisply perfect with snow.

    Hi Pauline,
I was happy to hear your blooms survived the snow. We snow is the worst……very slick.
Your blue orbs look especially pretty with snow on them. It really does give a different perspective.

    • Pauline says:

Snowdrops and hellebores have totally recovered, thank you Sally, looking very bright and perky now. The whole garden looks so different with a covering of snow, but I’m so glad it didn’t last long.

How beautiful. I am so jealous, still waiting for anything to stick! Snow is so transforming.xxx

    • Pauline says:

But Dina, I thought from the news and weather that you were having lots of snow where you are? On all the reports it shows snow all over the NW and Scotland, from experience though, when we lived in Ainsdale, being so near the sea, not much snow stayed for long. Snow certainly transforms the garden and hides the weeds!

A dusting of snow like this really shows up the structure of of garden. I love the steps with the blue pot and balls, it is very inviting. Keep warm and do be very careful if you have to go out (better to just wait until it all melts)

  8. Jason says:

That’s a pleasant quantity of snow. Gives everything a bit of a fairy tale look for a couple days and then fades away.

    • Pauline says:

A light covering makes the garden look totally different Jason, lovely for a short time, but I’m really pleased when it goes and I can get back to normal.

  9. Frank says:

It sure did look nice, and even better that it didn’t wear out its welcome!
Glad to hear things have turned back to warmer weather. No sense in having winter come back for a longer visit.

    • Pauline says:

I was so glad it didn’r stay very long Frank, just long enough to have a few photos taken. Our weather can’t make up its mind what to do, we are being told it is back to colder weather next week, just hope the flowers can cope!
