Indoor beauties.

I’m thoroughly cheesed off with my garden at the moment, I can’t whip up any enthusiasm for doing all that needs doing, so my attention is turning indoors. One of my kitchen windows faces north east and is proving to be just the right spot for my indoor flowering plants. No sun but plenty of light, just what they need. Outside at the moment the wind is howling through the trees and the rain is lashing the windows, leaves are falling everywhere but  these plants are nice and cosy indoors.

My first Christmas cactus to flower, I’ve never known it to be so early before.

The plant is covered with buds, up to now there are over 30 more flowers to come, but I’m sure more buds will form, hopefully I will still have some flowers for Christmas.

I won this orchid in a raffle back in July, more flowers are forming all the time, I’m very pleased with it so far and hope this continues.

I’ve grown orchids before but can never get them to repeat flower, hopefully it will be different with this one.

This African violet was passed onto me by a friend quite a while ago, it doesn’t seem to want to stop flowering, surely it must want a rest soon.

Such a lovely colour, this Streptocarpus has flowered all summer and is now winding down for a rest, it deserves it.

The dark background to all my photos is because I couldn’t sleep with all the wind and rain. The tiles were rattling on the roof, so in the end I got up even though it was only 4.30am and pitch black outside!

I like my windowsill of flowering plants, but once it starts getting frosty at night, I think I will have to bring them further into the room so they stay warm. They bring a smile to my face when I see them first thing in the morning and I’m still smiling when I see them last thing at night.

Some nice indoor blooming plants to cheer you every day, especially when the garden seems a bit frustrating.

    • Pauline says:

Thank you Peter, they do cheer me up when there isn’t much blooming outside. So many leaves have come down today, I know that the first fine day will be spent sweeping them all up and the same is forecast for the weekend, just as well I have my indoor blooms.

You made me smile Pauline….. I’m glad it’s not just me that gets fedup with the garden on occasion! Perhaps not surprising since the long dry Summer brought much frustration and extra work. It’s good that you can take a break with your beautiful houseplants and watch the rain lash down!

Another early bird Denise! I think we all get fed up with our gardens at times don’t we? I just feel so frustrated at the moment, not being able to get out and do everything that needs to be done. More torrential rain this morning, probably working its way over to you unfortunately!

HA, I am reading this post at 4:30 a.m. Some nights just aren’t for sleeping. At least you accomplished something. Sweet dreams!

  4. Mary B says:

Thanks for indoor sunshine in this wild wet weather ! Two of my Christmas cactus are flowering already, at least a month earlier than usual and a third one has buds near to opening .They never wait till Christmas but this is seriously early !

    • Pauline says:

My pink Christmas cactus usually flowers first Mary, but not this year, the white one has beaten it to it. It is covered with buds but will be a while yet before they open.

So many miles away and I was also hiding inside while the rain came down. Hope your storms settle down a bit and you’re getting some decent sleep tonight!
I spent today’s rainy morning setting up the growlights so I could bring a few things in for the winter. Unfortunately there are just no decent windowsills in this house.

    • Pauline says:

The rain eventually stopped Frank and I was able to emerge into the garden, still very windy though.
There is such a lot to do at this time of year preparing the plants for winter, I’m sure yours appreciate your grow lights.

What pretty houseplants you have, and that white cactus is especially pretty, Pauline, and a change from the more usual pink ones. It is of course far too wet to be doing jobs in the garden even if the enthusiasm is there – here I am having to make lists of what needs doing when time and weather allows 😉

    • Pauline says:

Thank you Cathy, I like the white one too. It wasn’t happy where I had it previously, probably too much sun, but is much happier now that it faces NE. More rain today so no more gardening done, the housework is claiming my attention!

  7. Anna says:

I enjoyed peeking at your indoor beauties Pauline. I wonder why that Christmas cactus has flowered so early for you. I’m fed up too with the weather – the last three or so days have seen much in the way of wind and rain. I know that when it dries up a bit there is much in the way of sweeping up leaves ahead but I’m trying to motivate myself by thinking of the resulting leafmould.

    • Pauline says:

It is early isn’t it Anna, the pink one will soon be joining it. The wind brought an awful lot of leaves down, hopefully that will mean less to clear away later. The leafmould is wonderful for my little woodland ephemerals, they love it and use it as a seed bed.

  8. Susie says:

What better way to spend early morning hours than photographing your indoor plants! Hope next sleep comes easier Pauline. The white cactus is especially attractive. Also love the color of the Streptocarpus–beautiful.

    • Pauline says:

Absolutely, I agree Susie! I slept much better the next night, thank you, the wind had died down and the rain had eased of, thank goodness. The Streptocarpus looked amazing in the summer with lots of the beautiful dark blue flowers, it was a joy.

Oh…I get wind and rain and not being able to sleep! I am cheesed off with the garden, I never did catch up this year after my surgery. Houseplants are soooo much easier and yours are just lovely! Loving the Christmas cactus, I used to have one, such lovely flowers. I do hope it still blooms at Christmas.xxx

    • Pauline says:

The white Christmas cactus is opening up lots more flowers now Dina, maybe I will have to photograph it again when all the buds have opened!
