How I became a “leaf peeper”

I am now officially a leaf peeper. A “leaf peeper” is someone who travels great distances to see the foliage of trees, usually in the USA. I have just returned from an amazing 5 day whirlwind trip to see my nephew in Canada who was celebrating a “Special Birthday” and managed to time my trip for the best of the fall  (autumn) colours. I have returned to some pretty amazing colours in my own garden too, but they will have to wait for a later post.

The very first tree that I saw was this beautiful tree in my nephew’s garden.

We were taken for a drive round the surrounding area, south of Toronto, stopping every time we saw wonderful colours.

There were so many trees to choose from, I will just show you a selection.

The majority of the trees were a wonderful golden yellow, but the reds really stood out.

So many to choose from.

All of a sudden we were passing Niagra Falls, so of couse we had to stop.

It must be almost 10 yrs since I was last here.

The American side.

We then headed along the lake side to the lovely town of Niagra by the Lake.

Making so many stops along the way.

Such a marvellous variety of colours.

There were wonderful views everywhere.

The weather improved as the day went by, the dark clouds blew away.

I do love the red Acers, this one by the road was really beautiful, photographed through the car windscreen.

Suddenly I yelled for the car to stop as I caught a glimpse of these trees in a car park at Niagra by the Lake. Poor Tim, what he had to put with from his aunt!

It was so worth it though. My daughter and I ( you didn’t think I went all that way by myself did you?!) took so many photos between us!

These trees were the best of the day, I felt I could have stayed there forever.

I’m running out of phrases to use about the wonderful colours.

The orange colours are my nephew’s favourites, so this one is for you Tim!

This orange one is turning red.

This is the last one for our first day. The rest of my photos will have to wait for me to re-size them so another post will follow soon.

I eventually arrived home this morning, having spent the night with my daughter and family in Bristol, now I feel so tired , a really early night is called for I think.

I will tackle the rest of my photos tomorrow, ready for my next post.

I’ve never been to Canada Pauline. I am quite stunned by the beauty of the countryside and the autumn colours. Not that I’m complaining, Sweden can be beautiful too! I’m glad you had such a lovely time there with your family.

    • Pauline says:

I’m sure Sweden is just as beautiful Denise, it really was so colourful with all the beautiful trees. Coming home I’ve found that my own trees are putting on a wonderful show, with my silver birch rivalling the acers. It was wonderful seeing the family again, I just wish they didn’t live so far away.

You captured a lot of gorgeous autumn foliage. Good job, dear leaf peeper. I’m glad you had a good visit with your nephew and hope he had a great birthday celebration.

Great photos and perfect timing Pauline! It is often hard to tell if you will get somewhere just in time for the seasonal highlights. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Cathy, we had to go when it was half term for my daughter, she is a teacher, so were really lucky to see all the colours that we did, I thought we might have been too late. It wasn’t as cold as I expected, thermals were not needed!
