Hanging in there. GBBD October 2018

I didn’t think there would be many flowers this month, but it is surprising what I found when I ventured out between the showers of Storm Callum. Some are bravely flowering away as if the wind and rain we have had lately had never happened.

Hydrangeas really suffered during the summer drought, but not this one under the kitchen window, why I wonder?

Michaelmas daisies have gone to seed in the front by the drive, but when they flower en masse like this one, all is forgiven.

Mahonia Charity by the dead oak is starting to flower once more. I think this one will need a good prune in the spring as it is now getting rather large.

Roses are still flowering, this is Bonica.

Buff Beauty which I grew from a cutting.

David Austin’s Abraham Darby.

David Austin’s Graham Thomas.

Sedum which has put itself in the shade but always flowers beautifully.

Cyclamen hederifolium still flowering in the woodland, I’ll have to wait a bit though before I can rake the leaves up, I would pull all the flowerheads off otherwise!

This cyclamen hederifolium has decided to grow in the gravel by the arbour in the back garden. Did the ants carry the seed all the way here?

Pots in the gravel area are still flowering, I must take cuttings soon before the frost cuts them down.

Fuchsias have done really well, this is F. Whiteknight’s Blush.

F. Delta Sarah has had to be cut back a couple of times, it was almost blocking the path.

And last but definitely not least, my variegated Yucca flower has started opening! In full bloom it is a wonderful flower, but I always wonder if it will manage to flower before the frosts come, time will tell.

There were certainly more flowers than I first thought, it pays to dodge the rain and take a walk round the garden.

Many thanks to Carol from May Dreams Garden who hosts Garden Bloggers Bloom Day on the 15th of each month, do pay her a visit to see more flowers in what can be a very dull, miserable month if you have dull, miserable weather!

Those could easily be summer photos! It’s lovely to have flowers still going strong in mid-October and makes that wander in the winds worthwhile.

  2. Alison says:

Yes, there are still a few flowers out there worth celebrating!

    • Pauline says:

I agree Alison, there are some plants that carry on no matter what the weather throws at them, I’m glad I found them and was able to appreciate them.

You were brave to be out in Storm Callum. It must be the wind direction but it’s been the worst one we’ve had here for sometime. Warm though.
Your yucca is gorgeous. All the better for it blooming at this time of year when everything else is giving up!

    • Pauline says:

I think we got the woest of the storm in the night Jessica, during the day didn’t seem to be nearly so bad. Yes, it was strange that it was so warm, didn’t seem right somehow.
The Yucca is getting better day by day, soon there will be lots of open flowers to photograph.

  4. Rebecca says:

You have lots of lovely blooms! Love the fuchsias and yucca.

    • Pauline says:

Thank you Rebecca, nice to hear from you. The fuchsias have done ever so well this year and don’t seem to want to stop flowering. I’m so pleased with my yucca, it doesn’t always flower each year, but it obviously liked the hot sun we had this summer.

Good to know you are out in the garden after the storm…oh…those roses, how gorgeous! Lovely seeing the yucca, I had one that only flowered every ten years! xxx

    • Pauline says:

The roses stopped flowering in the heat of the summer, but have made up for it since Dina. My Yucca usually flowers every other year, it seems to need a rest after putting up such a huge flower spike.

  6. Denise says:

I love the roses Pauline especially Buff Beauty and how clever of you to grow from it from a cutting! The fuchsias are lovely too, unfortunately they don’t manage in the climate here…. come to think of it, neither did the yucca I took with me from my garden in England!

    • Pauline says:

I did hardwood cuttings Denise for Buff Beauty, so easy to do. I can understand the Yucca not liking Swedish winters, I would think it would have to be in a pot to come in for the winter, but carrying it in would be a problem with all those spikes!

  7. Rosemarie says:

Lovely to see your beautiful roses still blooming after those storm winds, Pauline ! It was quite wild here in Powys too.

    • Pauline says:

Wales had it very bad didn’t they Rosemarie. My son in law and elder grandson had to abort a journey to Aberystwyth University open day, 3 times they met road closed signs because of floods, just couldn’t get through.

  8. debsgarden says:

Pauline, your fall garden looks great! I have a variegated yucca but had no idea it has the potential to flower like that. Mine is several years old and has never bloomed. Also love your fuchsias and your roses!

    • Pauline says:

Thank you Deb, My Yucca usually blooms evry 2 years, then branches where I cut the old flower spike out. The roses and fuchsias are doing really well, making up for lost time when they didn’t flower because of our unusually hot summer.

  9. Cathy says:

Your garden still must look lovely Pauline, despite the storm. You have some lovely flowers still. Hope your yucca manages to open before it turns colder. 🙂

  10. Cathy says:

Your roses were looking lovely in this post, Pauline – I wonder how many are still flowering now?
